ABOUT MIKE HEWETT
(B.1970) American
Born in West Monroe, Louisiana, artist Mike Hewett developed a passion for art through his grandmother, a landscape painter from West Texas. After earning degrees in accounting and business from Texas State and the University of Texas respectively, he returned to his artistic grassroots in 2015. Self-taught for most of his life, he sought guidance from acclaimed portrait painters Elizabeth Locke and Mark Carder to refine his technical skills.
Hewett's urban landscapes reflect everyday experiences with reverence to the mundane and reflect the spirit of the genre movement of the late 19th century. Conversely, combining art historical oil painting materials and techniques with a contemporary approach, Hewett brings to life the rugged terrains, vibrant colors, and breathtaking vistas of the southwestern United States. Sourced from his own digitally rendered photography, these works revere the sublime majesty of the natural world. Hewett also uses resin, plaster, and inks to create depth and vibrancy in his beautifully composed sculptural portraits of animal skulls.
Hewett's meticulous attention to detail and profound sense of observation challenge the viewer to both reconsider the ordinary and revere the beauty in the intangible.
